David M. Keepnews, PhD, JD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, is Professor and Dean of the Harriett Rothkopf Heilbrunn School of Nursing at Long Island Univesity, Brooklyn NY. He is Secretary of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Nursing. David is former Editor of Policy, Politics & Nursing Practice, a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal focusing on nursing and health policy, a role in which he served for a decade. David has held faculty positions at Hunter College at Adelphi University, the University of Washington and the University of Massachusetts Lowell.  David has previously served as Director of Graduate Programs for the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing; Director, Office of Policy Development for the New York Academy of Medicine; Director, Office of Policy, American Nurses Association; Regulatory Policy Specialist, California Nurses Association; and Assistant Regional Counsel, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He has also held positions as a staff nurse in psychiatric and substance abuse settings in New York and San Francisco. In addition to his membership on the AAN Board, David has served in volunteer leadership positions in several national and state professional nursing organizations. He is a recipient of the 2009 Media Award from the New York State Nurses Association. David earned his undergraduate nursing degree from the University of San Francisco; a Master of Public Health degree from the University of California and a Master of Science in nursing from Excelsior College. He holds a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and a PhD in Social Policy, with a concentration in health policy, from Brandeis University, where he was an AHRQ Fellow. He is certified as a Nurse Executive; Advanced by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
