Suzanne Miyamoto, PhD, RN is the Senior Director of Government Affairs and Health Policy at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). AACN represents more than 750 schools of nursing and serves as the national voice for baccalaureate and graduate nursing education. With over a decade of policy experience, Dr. Miyamoto leads the association’s advocacy work focused on advancing nursing education, research, and practice to promote a cost-effective, high quality healthcare system. Additionally, she is the Convener for the Nursing Community, a coalition of 61 national nursing organizations that collaborate on a wide spectrum of healthcare policy issues. Dr. Miyamoto is an adjunct assistant professor at Georgetown University, School of Nursing and Health Studies as well as at the University of Maryland, School of Nursing and lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, School of Nursing. Previously, she held policy positions at the state and federal level with the National Institutes of Health and the State Commission on Patient Safety for the Michigan Health and Safety Coalition. Dr. Miyamoto’s areas of research, publications, and presentations (national and international) focus on healthcare policy, coalition building, political advocacy, and the image of the nurse. Dr. Miyamoto received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Master of Science in Nursing, and Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, Women in Government Relations, and the American Nurses Association.
