Beth Houser is Chief Nursing Officer of Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine in Texas. Her previous leadership roles include Director of Critical Care and Telemetry at Scottsdale Healthcare (2005-2008) and Director of Nursing Research and the Magnet Project for John C. Lincoln - North Mountain (2002-2005) in Arizona. Since 2002, Beth has been a Magnet appraiser for the American Nurses Credentialing Center and has been involved in all aspects of the application process and program evolution. She is a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow (2002 cohort) and coauthored with Dr. Kathy Player Pivotal Moments in Nursing: Leaders Who Changed the Path of a Profession Volumes I and II as partial fulfillment of the Fellowship.
She graduated from the University of Arizona in 1978 with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and 20 years later completed her Master of Science degree from Arizona State University as a family nurse practitioner. In August 2004, Beth completed her doctoral dissertation, titled "Nursing Staffing Levels and Patient Outcomes," at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. The Johns Hopkins University program of study was devoted to educating nurse scientists to utilize large databases to answer global healthcare questions. Her career interests include patient safety and nurse-sensitive quality indicators, excellence in professional nursing practice, interdisciplinary team building, and creating a Magnet-like work environment.
Beth has guest lectured at many schools of nursing, presented Magnet information at national conferences, and published extensively on both leadership and Magnet topics. She is an active member of the American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International, American Organization of Nurse Executives, and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
Beth is the mother of three children . . . . Jessica – a mother herself of two beautiful children, Rob – a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and is currently serving a tour of duty in Iraq, and Kevin – student at the University of Arizona.
