Professor and Associate Dean for Faculty, and Co-Director, Iowa Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence in the College of Nursing at The University of Iowa in Iowa City. Previous academic leadership positions include interim head of the division of nursing at Truman State University, director of the RN-BSN program and Area Chair, Adult & Gerontology, at the University of Iowa.  Dr. Herr presents on pain-related topics to interdisciplinary geriatric audiences across the country and the world. She has numerous publications on the topic of geriatric pain, and has provided leadership on the board of directors for the American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN), the American Pain Society (APS), and the American Geriatrics Society (AGS). Awards include Nurse Excellence in Pain Management of the Older Adult from the ASPMN (2006), the Elizabeth Narcessian Award for Outstanding Educational Achievements in professional education in the field of pain by the APS (2005), the Regent's Award for Faculty Excellence (2005), Distinguished Contribution to Research in the Midwest Award, Midwest Nursing Research Society (2009), The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing/Midwest Nursing Research Society Award for Leadership in Geriatric Nursing Research (2011) and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Gerontological Nurses Association (2012).
